"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too." 2 COR 1: 3-5
We live in a world of ever-increasing emotional isolation. From fences between neighbors to separate bedrooms for husband and wives, we are experiencing a breakdown in our ability to share our lives with others.
How do we respond when someone breaks down emotionally?
Our friendships often lack depth because we insist on being superficial. Its all about fun and good times. But life includes times that are neither fun nor good! And it's in those times of disappointment, doubt, discouragement and downright ugliness - that true bonding occurs.
We've become so guarded that we don't let anyone know we're hurting. We don't want to bear the burden of the unpleasant details of our friends' trials, so we figure they don't want to hear the burden of ours either. Well, that's unfortunate, because this realm of open and transparent communication is where true friendship flourishes.
Friendships are made and kept by sharing life's joys and pains, enjoying each other's strengths while putting up with each other's imprefections, and extending love and forgiveness. Friendships are made by sharing each other's dreams and dreads, truths, consequences, pleasures and sorrows.
In our lives, there are people with whom God desires that we share the emotional strength He has given us.
God desires us to give emotionally to others with unconditional love.
